No one has to go to Antartica to know that Idi Amin was mad, and no one has to look deep within themselves to recognize that Forest Whittaker is a genius, but...
This movie was a major dissapointment me to such an extent that i got up at one point during the screening and said the "F word" loudly at night and got embarrassed for a few mins. Is it because i was fighting within myself to pick up a great masterpiece. A sort of cult creation generation right now in new wave 2007 Cinema.
My problem with this movie. The undertone is disturbing. 'Again' we are told this story through the eyes of a young white scottish doctor, who decides to embark on the 'African' experience. He loves the place, gets lucky on his first bus trip, and ends up becoming Amin`s numero uno adviser in a flash. Yet he begins to see the world through the eyes of the 'perenially good white man'. How could he have let himself be carried away in 'dark corrupted Africa'. "White people generally do not do things like that, they generally come back to their senses", the movie tries to convey. To back this argument, check out what the British Consulate`s views on Idi Amin, "We`ve put him there now we sorely regret it". This movie is another white morality tale that Hollywood feeds us every once in while (300 is another one !). The bad guys are the corrupt Amin type African men, the good guys with an inner conscience are always the white folks, and what makes me laugh even louder are that the white colonialists in the movie (The British) have a great sense of justice and humanity (Did anyone study Ugandan history lately ?). Ok i agree that they try to picture a couple of Africans as the 'good guys' (the black doctor in the hospital), who eventually dies a pitiful death in the end, killed by Amin`s man. Conclusion: only 'bad' black people kill 'good' black people, the colonialists are only trying to give a helping hand for the betterment of Africa. They are in Africa only to help !
Again if i was to write a small summary of this movie on a DVD box this is what i would write: " This movie is a white fairy tale about a good white guy who accidentally finds himself caught in the Company of the 99.99% of bad Africans out there in the African wild. Yet Judeo-Christian philosophy prevails in the end and the white guy redeems himself and moves away and manages to run to Europe. Europe, the bastion of Truth and Justice". PLEASE DO NOT SEE THIS MOVIE !
